October 17, 2008
Today I write not to gloat. Given the pain that nearly everyone is experiencing, that would be entirely inappropriate. Nor am I writing to make further predictions, as most of my forecasts in previous letters have unfolded or are in the process of unfolding. Instead, I am writing to say goodbye.

Recently, on the front page of Section C of the Wall Street Journal, a hedge fund manager who was also closing up shop (a $300 million fund), was quoted as saying, "What I have learned about the hedge fund business is that I hate it." I could not agree more with that statement. I was in this game for the money. The low hanging fruit, i.e. idiots whose parents paid for prep school, Yale, and then the Harvard MBA, was there for the taking. These people who were (often) truly not worthy of the education they received (or supposedly received) rose to the top of companies such as AIG, Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers and all levels of our government. All of this behavior supporting the Aristocracy only ended up making it easier for me to find people stupid enough to take the other side of my trades. God bless America.

There are far too many people for me to sincerely thank for my success. However, I do not want to sound like a Hollywood actor accepting an award. The money was reward enough. Furthermore, the endless list of those deserving thanks know who they are.
I will no longer manage money for other people or institutions. I have enough of my own wealth to manage. Some people, who think they have arrived at a reasonable estimate of my net worth, might be surprised that I would call it quits with such a small war chest. That is fine; I am content with my rewards. Moreover, I will let others try to amass nine, ten or eleven figure net worths. Meanwhile, their lives suck. Appointments back to back, booked solid for the next three months, they look forward to their two week vacation in January during which they will likely be glued to their Blackberries or other such devices. What is the point? They will all be forgotten in fifty years anyway. Steve Balmer, Steven Cohen, and Larry Ellison will all be forgotten. I do not understand the legacy thing. Nearly everyone will be forgotten. Give up on leaving your mark. Throw the Blackberry away and enjoy life.

So this is it. With all due respect, I am dropping out. Please do not expect any type of reply to emails or voicemails within normal time frames or at all. Andy Springer and his company will be handling the dissolution of the fund. And don't worry about my employees, they were always employed by Mr. Springer's company and only one (who has been well-rewarded) will lose his job.

I have no interest in any deals in which anyone would like me to participate. I truly do not have a strong opinion about any market right now, other than to say that things will continue to get worse for some time, probably years. I am content sitting on the sidelines and waiting. After all, sitting and waiting is how we made money from the subprime debacle. I now have time to repair my health, which was destroyed by the stress I layered onto myself over the past two years, as well as my entire life - where I had to compete for spaces in universities and graduate schools, jobs and assets under management - with those who had all the advantages (rich parents) that I did not. May meritocracy be part of a new form of government, which needs to be established.

On the issue of the U.S. Government, I would like to make a modest proposal. First, I point out the obvious flaws, whereby legislation was repeatedly brought forth to Congress over the past eight years, which would have reigned in the predatory lending practices of now mostly defunct institutions. These institutions regularly filled the coffers of both parties in return for voting down all of this legislation designed to protect the common citizen. This is an outrage, yet no one seems to know or care about it. Since Thomas Jefferson and Adam Smith passed, I would argue that there has been a dearth of worthy philosophers in this country, at least ones focused on improving government. Capitalism worked for two hundred years, but times change, and systems become corrupt. George Soros, a man of staggering wealth, has stated that he would like to be remembered as a philosopher. My suggestion is that this great man start and sponsor a forum for great minds to come together to create a new system of government that truly represents the common man's interest, while at the same time creating rewards great enough to attract the best and brightest minds to serve in government roles without having to rely on corruption to further their interests or lifestyles. This forum could be similar to the one used to create the operating system, Linux, which competes with Microsoft's near monopoly. I believe there is an answer, but for now the system is clearly broken.

Lastly, while I still have an audience, I would like to bring attention to an alternative food and energy source. You won't see it included in BP's, "Feel good. We are working on sustainable solutions," television commercials, nor is it mentioned in ADM's similar commercials. But hemp has been used for at least 5,000 years for cloth and food, as well as just about everything that is produced from petroleum products. Hemp is not marijuana and vice versa. Hemp is the male plant and it grows like a weed, hence the slang term. The original American flag was made of hemp fiber and our Constitution was printed on paper made of hemp. It was used as recently as World War II by the U.S. Government, and then promptly made illegal after the war was won. At a time when rhetoric is flying about becoming more self-sufficient in terms of energy, why is it illegal to grow this plant in this country? Ah, the female. The evil female plant - marijuana. It gets you high, it makes you laugh, it does not produce a hangover. Unlike alcohol, it does not result in bar fights or wife beating. So, why is this innocuous plant illegal? Is it a gateway drug? No, that would be alcohol, which is so heavily advertised in this country. My only conclusion as to why it is illegal, is that Corporate America, which owns Congress, would rather sell you Paxil, Zoloft, Xanax and other addictive drugs, than allow you to grow a plant in your home without some of the profits going into their coffers. This policy is ludicrous. It has surely contributed to our dependency on foreign energy sources. Our policies have other countries literally laughing at our stupidity, most notably Canada, as well as several European nations (both Eastern and Western). You would not know this by paying attention to U.S. media sources though, as they tend not to elaborate on who is laughing at the United States this week. Please people, let's stop the rhetoric and start thinking about how we can truly become self-sufficient.
With that I say goodbye and good luck.
All the best,
Andrew Lahde

Old

I am a young man stuck in an old body. I wish I were 21-25 again, I was a God. Now I am broken, and my body has betrayed me.

Sometimes death does seem to be the best way out, the easy way out.  It's not, and that thinking is wrong, but when you feel utterly and completely useless, those things creep into your head.

Bah.  My sugar must be out of whack, depression and all that.

Meh.

Mentioned At Lifehacker Again!

Lifehacker.com has mentioned one of my desktops again.  This one was just eye candy, fun but pretty much useless.

I was playing with Shock3D, a "3-Dimensional" desktop, and I made the video below to show to some friends.  I commented on another article on Lifehacker.com and posted the video below.

Car Accident

I was in an accident Oct 3rd at about 3:30pm.  We have a newly blacktopped highway (route) and it had just rained enough to mix with the oily surface and make it slick as snot.  This was compounded by my right, rear tire blowing at 50mph on a curve.  My car slid off the road and down a steep 15ft embankment.  I caught air, and a tree stopped me.  The impact was fairly hard, knocked me unconscious, tore a muscle in my neck, bruised both my right and left legs, and dislocated my right shoulder.  My wife popped it back in for me at the scene, and because I was pumped full of adrenaline, I refused treatment saying I was fine.  (blood pressure 154/100, pulse 112)

Believe me, an hour later (waiting for the state police who never showed up), I was starting to feel the pain.  Kathy (wife) finally forced me to go to the emergency room.  I feel like hammered shit.  I am okay though, and the car has a ton of scratches, a dent in the right rear quarter panel where the tree stopped me.  I took out 2 6-10 inch saplings.

Silver lining:  They were able to pull the car out, and change the tire, runs like a champ with no adverse effects other than body damage.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a wonderful day in the neighborhood...

Wow. Just. Wow.

We started with Sprint on August 22nd, 2008. We were told we were in a "best reception area" and service would never be a problem. I bought a Centro, my wife and daughter opted for the Rumor.
Sitting in the middle of this "best reception area", in the open, in clear view of 1 of 3 towers, we cannot call on Sprint, all 3 phones automatically roll over to roaming, which effects our minutes. If we place them on "Home Only", there is no service, or only one bar, and the calls sound like a broken drive-thru restaurant speaker. On all three phones.

Aug 28th, we made our first trouble call. They opened a ticket, I called back nightly to check it's status, no one could give me an answer except to check my phone settings, then they stated they had tried calling me "several" times, and closed the ticket.
A week later I opened ticket number 2, they told me it was my phones and suggested we change phones. They closed the ticket without a resolution.

We then traded the two Rumors across for 2 more, and I returned my Centro and upgraded to a Treo 800w. This is now Sept. 10th. I purchased and activated my new phone.

A week later I opened ticket #3. Same problems. I received a voice mail during the hours my phone was off and I asked Sprint not call during those hours while I was at work, (they did anyway), the voice mail stated that they had made calls in my area and all was well, and that roaming was ok as long as I could make calls and that roaming all the time did not effect my plan minutes. They closed the ticket. I kept a call log, and between the 3 phones we used 357 minutes, but online Sprint states we used 775 minutes.

So now, ticket #4, this one was closed because they stated they tried calling over several days and no one had answered. Several days, but the ticket was closed THE VERY NEXT DAY. I have an answering machine, if it isn't up or my home line is down it rolls over to voice mail, and if that is down (it never is) that rolls over to cell voice mail.

They re-open ticket 4. Next day I get a voice mail stating that they were logged into my phone and I am connected to a Sprint tower. The phone was without a battery in it at the time, the battery was being charged in a cradle, and it wasn't connected to anything. They close it again.

I have these voicemails.

I have 36 signatures of people in my area having the exact same problem.

Now then, to top all this off, my Treo is having charging issues, which I told the Sprint Express rep about, and he said he would get back to me. Finally, on October 8th, I can no longer even plug the charger into the port, it is stripped and the plastic is bent. Regular use, plug/unplug twice a day, no car charger. I even bought the extended battery and a ton of accessories.

I have TEP though Asurion, but this is obviously a manufacturer defect, and within 30 days of original purchase. One guess as to how this will turn out. Sprint Express can't take it, the original activation of service (not the phone) was Aug. 22, they want $100 if I even bring it to the store. Palm can't take it since it is less than 30 days from purchase. Sprint corp can't replace it, it is less than 30 days from purchase and activation.

4 hours on the phone and I FINALLY get someone who takes the time to read, and listen, and she has me send it to Asurion, and they charge it to my Sprint account, then she is going to credit the $50. OUTSTANDING!

Then, the next morning, my wife hits something in the road, has a blowout going down a hill, and is terrified, guess what? SHE CAN'T MAKE A CALL IN A SPRINT BEST RECEPTION AREA! Verizon has no coverage in that area, and that's who we roam too, I guess it's in our Preferred Roaming List. I know for a fact AT&T has great coverage there, we switched to Sprint from them, and we are now switching back.

That is probably the straw that broke the camel's back.

We went to AT&T and ordered 3 new phones, plus services, about $699 after rebates. We put in for a number port on our 3 phones. They won't port the numbers until the phones are shipped Oct 15th.
I receive my replacement Treo 800w today, send my broken one back in the mail, then go to activate the new one, they won't activate it saying a number port is in process. Still not a problem, the damn service was unusable any way, so, officially my number is unable to be ported and I cannot use Sprint services, but they still want to charge me for said services. I asked them to remove charges for the 3rd line ($19.99), Navigator ($9.99) and TEP ($7.00). They say no. They won't even activate the phone with a temporary number. The rep puts me on hold yet again, while on hold, I conference in our family lawyer, fill him in, play the voicemails, (10 minute hold this time), and we are now up to 2 hours on the phone.

When a human finally gets back on the line, it's the cancellation department. Why? I have no idea. My lawyer speaks up and that person puts us on hold without saying a word. We are now at 2 hours and 23 minutes, we finally get to a supervisor who doesn't identify himself. After 13 more minutes of wrangling, the supervisor agrees to suspend the line that cannot be used. He then tells us our next bill will be prorated to $19.99+$7.00+$7.00 ONLY, which is 3rd line + insurance + insurance. He also tells me that this will not effect my number being ported to AT&T and that will go smoothly. (*cough*yeahright*cough*) I can't wait to see how Sprint screws this one up.

Since the number suspended was the main line on the account, I no longer am paying $129 for my package, and my wife/daughter still have unlimited SMS, 1500 shared minutes, Navigator and insurance. Essentially they now have free service. I hope that this supervisor was right and we don't end up being screwed by his actions in the end. (pun intended)

In the mean time, I am stuck with a brand new, never activated Treo 800w with a ton of accessories and I have no idea what to do with it. eBay, here I come?

I spoke to a "Rachel" today who asked me my 10 digit Sprint phone number so she could "best 'endorse' my call". I gave it to her, asked her to transfer me to customer care, then ended up arguing with her for 7 minutes while she nosed around instead of transferring me. She finally said she would transfer me to customer care, put me on hold. When the phone was picked up the person who answered said she was "Karen" with customer service and asked me "How can I best 'ENDORSE' your call?" SAME PERSON. Same voice, same accent, same mistaken use of the word 'endorse'.

Vote for my call, it has ENDORSEMENTS.

Wow...just wow.

Goodbye Sprint, the single worst company I have ever dealt with in 42 years of life. Every CSR I spoke to was rude, a "rest on your laurels" ego ridden, win the argument phone troll. Only 3 people I spoke to were polite and helpful or knowledgeable. The rest were liars, not understandable, or just plain stupid? I spoke to Sprint at least 3 times a day over a 45 day period
